I have been eating super unhealthy this week because I&#8217;m on vacation and usally only eat fairly healthy foods but I want to start to eat only egg whites fruits and veggies for a while , would it be a good idea to go on a detox diet ? And can you please suggest good detox diets if yes</p>

<p>After reading your question I saw you were interested in optimizing your nutrition [(-:] so even though I may not be able to answer your question exactly as you may have wanted it answered, I thought I would take the time to pass on some pointers I have learned the hard way from my own bad &#8216;uninformed&#8217; choices, so you could learn about good advice and bad advice about good nutritional choices. </p>

The South Beach Diet does involve avoiding certain types of food entirely, but not forever. Followers of the diet are encouraged to approach their weight loss in three different phases.</p>
<p>The point of these phases is not to encourage very rapid, unhealthy weight loss or put you on a diet roller coaster, but to ease you into a healthy lifestyle and a lean body you can be proud of.</p>
<p><span id="more-1753"></span></p>
<p><b>South Beach Diet: Phase One</b></p>
<p>The first phase of the South Beach Diet is the most restrictive. During this stage, you may eat normal sized portions of food, but you must avoid all carbohydrates, sweets and starches. This phase will last for two weeks. The healthiest approach to this phase is to eat only lean meats like chicken, turkey, fish, shellfish and lean cuts of beef. You should also choose vegetables with a low glycemic index (GI), such as asparagus, cabbage, cauliflower and celery. Nuts, eggs, low-fat cheese and soy products are also excellent choices to keep a healthy diet during the first phase of the South Beach Diet. It is crucial to avoid some foods that might be considered carbs yet are still inappropriate for a low-carb diet, such as fatty cuts of beef like prime rib, honey-glazed or sugar-cured ham, beets, corn, and carrots. During this phase, you can expect to lose 8 to 12 pounds if you follow the guidelines correctly.</p>
<p><b>South Beach Diet: Phase Two</b></p>
<p>After two weeks have passed and you have achieved a large proportion of your weight loss goal, it is time to move on to the second phase of the South Beach Diet. </p>
<p>During the second phase, you will continue to lose weight at a slow, steady rate, about 1 to 2 pounds per week. This can last as long as you would like it to. During this time, Dr. Agaston encourages you re-incorporate some carbs and higher glycemic index fruits and vegetables into your diet. It is important to control your portions of these foods, and continue to avoid most of the foods forbidden during the first phase. Acceptable foods for phase two include whole grain bread and pasta, moderate GI veggies like peas, peppers and onions.</p>
<p>It is extremely important to continue to avoid sweets, high GI carbs like white bread and heavy fats during this stage of the South Beach Diet. Not doing so could halt your weight loss.</p>
<p><b>South Beach Diet: Phase Three</b></p>
<p>Phase three of the South Beach Diet is also known as &#8220;The Maintenance Phase&#8221;, because it involves keeping healthy eating habits and monitoring your weight for the rest of your life. During this phase, you may reincorporate the foods you stopped eating during the first two phases. However, it is crucial that you use the knowledge you&#8217;ve accumulated about high-carb foods to create a diet that will not cause you to gain back the weight you&#8217;ve lost. Keeping those carbs in check and replacing unhealthy carbs like pasta and white bread with whole grains will help. Of course, if your weight ever gets out of control again, you can simply go back to the first phase of the South Beach Diet and get your healthy body back again.

<p>As for meals, snacks, drinks, etc., I&#8217;m sorry, but this should be rather obvious to you. If you don&#8217;t know that fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts/seeds, and whole grains are low-cholesterol and how to cook with those without drowning them in butter and lard, you need to talk to your doctor and request to see a nutritionist.</p>

<p>I&#8217;m sure you&#8217;ve heard of the Mediterranean Diet and its&#8217; link to heart health. The Mediterranean Diet emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fish, and monounsaturated fats (olive oil). </p>
<p>Those that follow a Mediterranean Diet have a reduced risk of developing heart disease and dying from a heart attack. Even those that have survived a heart attack and lived to adopt the Mediterranean Diet significantly reduced their risk of a second heart attack and other complications. </p>
<p><span id="more-1743"></span></p>
<p>In an interesting twist, while many westerns try to follow a Mediterranean diet to reduce heart disease, the native Mediterranean population has gradually adopted a more Western diet. The Mediterranean area has seen an income rise that&#8217;s resulted in extra dollars being spent on meat and saturated fat food sources, leading to the negative results those of us in the U.S. are all too familiar with. Over the past 4 decades the average calorie intake in the Mediterranean countries has increased ~30%. So, the once healthy Mediterranean people now face increasing weight epidemics &#8211; 75% of the population overweight or obese in Greece, with over half of the population in Italy, Spain, and Portugal following suit. These countries are now supporting the &#8220;Mediterranean Diet&#8221; as a part of their cultural heritage they can not let die. </p>
<p>Here&#8217;s a quick breakdown of the characteristics common to a Mediterranean Diet:</p>
<p>Consume high intake of fruits and vegetablesSelect whole grainsConsume healthy fats (canola and olive oil)Eat nuts in moderationLow red wine consumptionLimit eggs to less than 4 times per weekConsume little red meatEat fish regularly
<p>Let&#8217;s get into more specifics.</p>
<p><b>Fruits, vegetables, and whole grains</b></p>
<p>A high intake of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains reduces LDL (the &#8220;bad&#8221;) cholesterol that leads to a build-up of arterial plaque. Grains in the Mediterranean region are whole grain with very little unhealthy trans fats. Breads in the Mediterranean region are typically eaten without butter or margarine.</p>
<p><b>Healthy Fats</b></p>
<p>When following a Mediterranean diet you need to choose fats wisely. Include monounsaturated fat and polyunsaturated fats. Sources of these healthy fats include olive oil, canola oil, nuts, and fish. The Mediterranean diet approach does not include a high saturated fat intake or trans fatty acids, both of which contribute to heart disease.</p>
<p><b>Olive oil</b> &#8211; provides monounsaturated fat, which helps reduce LDL cholesterol. To receive the highest level of antioxidant benefits, select &#8220;extra-virgin&#8221; and &#8220;virgin&#8221; olive oils, the least processed forms. When you see the term &#8220;light&#8221; on olive oil labels, it indicates a reduced olive flavor. </p>
<p><b>Nuts</b> &#8211; high in fat and calories, but low in saturated fat and depending on the nut you select can be a good source of heart healthy omega 3 fatty acids (i.e. walnuts). Eat in moderation due to high calorie content and limit the heavily salted nuts or honey roasted.</p>
<p><b>Wine</b></p>
<p>Red wine can have a similar affect to aspirin in that it reduces blood clotting. Red wine also contains antioxidants. If you&#8217;ve been following my posts, you know that I am not a supporter of using alcohol to reduce heart disease risk. If you already drink wine, continuing to do so in moderation (less than 4 ounces of wine per day) may be beneficial. If you do not currently consume wine, I do not recommend you start. Too much wine will counteract your good intentions and lead to additional complications, such as increased blood pressure.</p>
<p><b>Omega 3&#8242;s and Fish</b></p>
<p>Increase your intake of heart healthy omega 3 fatty acids, which are linked to reduced triglycerides, reduced arterial inflammation, lower blood pressure, and high HDL (good) cholesterol. Include fish (I don&#8217;t mean battered and fried) as a regular part of your diet in place of the more typical red meats, use flaxseed in your diet, and consider an omega 3 supplement.

<p>But to answer the question, &#8220;Do detox diets lower your metabolic rate?,&#8221;&#8230; If you go on a fasting period long enough, you can slow your metabolic rate. Thankfully, the body can be tricked into believing you&#8217;re still eating and thus maintain its regular metabolism.</p>

<p>Want to try a detox diet? Detoxification diets have become more popular recently as people are sick of the constant processed junk foods they eat, the toxic air they breathe and the tainted water they have to filter.</p>
<p>There are many forms of detox diets you can try &#8211; from juice fasts to the alkaline diet to a raw foods diet to taking specific herbs and cutting out foods like meat, dairy, wheat and/or processed foods. Many people decide to educate themselves first about their options and then choose a plan that fits in with their current lifestyle and schedule.</p>

<p>Again, this depends on what kind of detox you&#8217;re doing. If you&#8217;re doing a strict water-only detox or a lemonade detox diet, you&#8217;ll be at risk of developing nutritional deficiencies like B vitamins, certain minerals and iron.</p>
<p>#3 You could experience a detox reaction.</p>
<p>If you detox too fast, you run the risk of getting what is called a Herxheimer reaction or &#8216;die-off&#8217; symptoms as your body dumps toxins faster than your liver and intestines can deal with them. This can manifest in headaches, chills, dizziness and depression.</p>
<p>While some symptoms are manageable, you want to be careful to listen to your body and not go overboard. You can always slow the detox down with some rice or cooked vegetables.</p>
<p>Even some organic oatmeal can help to slow things down without damaging your progress. Just make sure to listen to your body and only do what you can.</p>
<p>So those are some things to be aware of when trying a detox diet. There are many different detoxification diets on the market, with some better than others. Take your time to find one that seems balanced and makes sense to you.</p>

<p>Low Cholesterol Diet Recipes To Stick With. Here is just one idea for low cholesterol diet recipes: Pasta Broccoli with Roasted ChickenIngredients:1 one pound box of pasta of your choice, (1 box- whole wheat or higher fiber brands work best with low cholesterol diet recipes!)1 10 oz. Box of frozen chopped broccoli, and fresh boneless, skinless chicken breasts (about 1 lb)Have on hand: canned or boxed low sodium chicken broth fresh garlic cloves olive oil salt and pepper to taste Take chicken breasts (about one pound) and let marinate in low sodium chicken broth for at least 30 minutes. Chicken meals are more plentiful in reduced cholesterol weight loss recipes than beef main dishes. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place chicken breasts in pan and bake for 30-40 minutes until cooked through. If you prefer, you can stir them in a pan on top of stove. Boil pasta, preferably whole grain, according to package direction. Once pasta is added, and boiling, place frozen broccoli in small saucepan according to package directions. Drain pasta, return to pot. Keep warm. Drain broccoli, reserving a half cup of liquid. Pour broccoli into pasta pot and add about a quarter to a half cup of olive oil along with chopped fresh garlic cloves. Use one or two cloves for milder garlic flavor or more depending on your taste. Take cooked chicken, cut up into bite size pieces and add to pasta. Heat through and serve hot with salt and pepper to taste. When preparing low cholesterol weight loss recipes, seasoning can add flavor. Variations: Substitute white beans for chicken. Simply drain and rinse and add to pasta and broccoli and heat through. Use cauliflower, carrots or peas for the vegetable. Use fresh vegetables if in season and available. Salmon and similar fish along with various beans can be a staple of low cholesterol weight loss meals.
