<p>When you make the decision to lose weight, you inevitably then have to go and choose a diet that not only will do the trick but also be a diet and exercise package that will be acceptable and stimulating. If you start off with a poor diet and exercise program, you&#8217;ll most likely drop it and that just makes your weight loss program a big waste of time. Here&#8217;s some food for thought&#8230;</p>
<p>Following a lose weight program is the most simple and efficient solution to getting rid of your extra pounds (or at least most of them). You can find these programs all around you: books that guide you, on-line weight loss programs, TV shows, etc. You can choose which one to follow depending on your personal eating habits and on the money you are willing to spend for such a program.</p>

<p>Many of us have a sedentary lifestyle, we go to work by car and then sit at a desk for eight hours or more, and we are always tempted by tasty and cheap but unhealthy food, rich in fats and carbohydrates. The result can be measured in the extra pounds we &#8220;gain&#8221; and it can vary from just a few extra pounds to obesity, depending on our metabolism &amp; activities. As obesity became one of the major problems of the civilized world, an entire industry has developed on the basis of people&#8217;s need to lose weight. <p>The low fat weight loss program recommends a diet based on low fat or no fat foods. Reducing fat intake and regular exercise results in long-lasting weight loss. This program can be very effective if produced and supervised by an expert. Many low fat programs found on the market reduce fat consumption too much and it can become harmful for your health. A very high consumption of carbs is also not good, which is often recommended by some programs. However, this diet is one of the best ways to lose weight, but it is important they are described in the correct manner.</p>
<p>High Protein Diet</p>
<p>This weight loss program is based on the consumption of high protein and low carb foods. Although it leads to reasonably rapid weight loss, it is often NOT an effective diet in the long run. It encourages the consumption of saturated fats and this increases the risk of heart diseases. It can also cause damage to your kidneys, as in the absence of enough carbs, for the rapid burning of fatty acids the kidneys have to work overtime.</p>

<p>This type of weight loss program indicates you apply a fixed menu diet. You get a list of what you have to eat everyday. It is easy to follow because you don&#8217;t need to keep the calorie count. Its efficiency and healthiness can vary greatly.</p>
<p>Points Program</p>
<p>This weight loss program is created by Weight Watchers, a company offering different dieting products and services for weight loss. The points system consists in quantifying the caloric intake and the energy expenditure. Foods are assigned a specific number of points and exercises are assigned a negative number of points. Based on their current weight and weight loss goals, program participants are allocated a certain number of points every week. Therefore, participants are allowed to eat any type of food, but they must not exceed their total point value that week. This is an easy to follow program, mainly because of the psychological effect is has on the participant.</p>
<p>Food Optimizing</p>
<p>This weight loss program is created by Slimming World, a British company which runs weight loss classes across the UK. During classes members are weighed and the loss or gain is shared with the others; they also share experiences, tips, ask for advice, etc.</p>
<p>The diet is a calorie-restricted one. The foods known as &#8220;free foods&#8221;, are considered to have a low calorie content may be eaten in unrestricted amounts. They recommend eating four small portions per day of foods that provide supplies of minerals, vitamins or dietary fiber, even if these foods are higher in calories. Days are classified in red days and greendays. There are red days &#8220;free foods&#8221; and green days &#8220;free foods&#8221;, and all other foods are assigned a syn value.</p>
<p>Although most of us know the do&#8217;s and don&#8217;ts in order to lose weight, it becomes much easier if we are using a precise weight loss program, this way we get more determined.</p>
<p>The most important thing is not to expect short term extraordinary results. Even if there are weight loss programs that guarantee this, you may cause serious injury to your health and you will only enjoy short-time results normally. A good diet should always include all of the Recommended Daily Allowances for vitamins, minerals and proteins. Also, the weight loss program must offer you solutions for maintenance after the weight loss phase is over; and this is much more difficult than the weight loss itself. It is important to know that only healthy the eating habits and exercise are the primary keys to long term weight control.</p>

<p>What, exactly, is a detox diet? As described by several sources, a detox diet is a nutritional regimen that involves changing bad eating and drinking habits in order to cleanse the body of toxins and other contaminants. A detox has become quite the thing to do these days, and many claim that completing a detox can improve overall health and digestion as well as to heighten resistance to illness and help in weight control. All of the above can be accomplished with good, nutritious eating habits and healthy living styles, but we seem to want to do everything the hard way; hence a detox diet becomes necessary to bring us back to the point where we should have been anyway.</p>
<p>A detox diet can be comprised of many different methodologies. Some people prefer to fast, and only drink water or juice for a certain period of time. Others prefer to increase the amount of fish they eat. Others restrict the amount of calories they consume while others resort to bottled methods like an herbal detox diet. Some even go on a lemonade diet that is more commonly known as the &#8220;Master Cleanse&#8221; detox diet.</p>

<p>It stands to reason that any detox diet must be carefully monitored to ensure proper ingestion of nutritious foods, and many merely suggest that a person add more fruits and vegetables to their diet. Of course, staying away from fast food and soda, cigarettes and alcohol is a given. A detox diet is all about changing eating habits and adopting healthy and nutritiously balanced diets and foregoing McDonald&#8217;s and Taco Bell offerings. It has become a fad to call anything that offers such a drastic change in eating or drinking habits a detox diet.</p>
<p>Still, some argue that the body is already more than capable of ridding itself of toxic wastes and that a detox diet is not only unnecessary but can also be dangerous. Our bodies are meant to contain a certain amount of fats and sugars, and to try to rid the body of these items with a detox diet can cause medical problems such as anemia, low blood sugar and lethargy and weakness. The balance of electrolytes, fats, enzymes, proteins, and carbohydrates in the body are finely tuned and shouldn&#8217;t be tampered with. A detox diet that allows only liquid is not to be considered a safe alternative to exercise and a normal, well balanced diet. Studies have shown that the lack of protein in most of the more common types of detox diet decreases muscle mass in individuals. With less muscle mass, the metabolism automatically slows down, which will threaten most well-intentioned weight loss diets regardless of what you do.</p>
<p>Call it what you will. While a detox diet can help people learn new and better eating habits, as with everything, a detox diet should be done using caution and good judgment. Perhaps we could avoid all this unnecessary detox diet stuff by just eating better and exercising more in the first place.

<p>Who doesn&#8217;t crave for health? Who doesn&#8217;t want to have his sandwich with an extra layer of mayonnaise without caring about the girth around the waist? And who doesn&#8217;t want to stop thinking about what to eat and what not to? Surely, in addition to all that, we also want to have rippling muscles. But leave that for later because in today&#8217;s hectic life it&#8217;s difficult to find time and energy for a regular jog, let alone pumping iron Arnie style.</p>
<p>If I were to advise adopting a healthy lifestyle I am sure it would sound like an oft-suggested-never-followed kind of an advise, which it surely is. But the fact is, nothing helps better than a healthy lifestyle with some form of regular physical activity thrown in. It not only keeps one fit but also helps reduce one&#8217;s risk of disease, especially heart ailments. Cholesterol is considered to be the erring element.</p>
<p><span id="more-1788"></span></p>
<p>One of the effective ways to reduce blood cholesterol is to combine regular physical activity with low cholesterol diet. A diet with low cholesterol may include foods with high fiber and vitamin content, and must be low on fat. Now going low on fat does not mean that you shun fat altogether because fat is an important requirement for the healthy functioning of the body. They help the body in digestion and excretion.</p>
<p>As indicated earlier, a low fat diet alone will not be sufficient to substantially reduce your chances of a heart stroke. For that you must exercise a bit. This is not to say that you join the fancy neighborhood gym. Exercise may just comprise of half an hour of brisk walking or light jogging in the morning or in the evening. Mornings are better because at that time the air has more oxygen which is healthy for every single cell in your body. That&#8217;s the reason why nothing matches a morning of vigorous activity. </p>
<p>Cut down on smoking and if possible quit it. Moderate drinking may not be harmful but if you tend to get carried away and often cross the delicate boundary between light and heavy drinking, it&#8217;s better that you keep clear of alcohol altogether.</p>
<p>For those who have a family history of cholesterol related problems it is important to be extra cautious, as they are more likely to have cholesterol accumulation.</p>
<p>Switching to a low cholesterol diet helps one reduce one&#8217;s chances of a stroke and pumps more life in every second of life. What more could one ask for?</p>

<p>I am a food person and quite frankly, diets scare me. It isn&#8217;t just the mere thought of parting from my sweet pastries, junk food and cola that make me nervous. Aside from the apprehension brought by possible food withdrawal symptoms, the risks and side effects of a <a href="http://epopulardiets.com">low carb diet</a> has me worried big time. </p>

<p>Going online and doing research on the dangers of low carb diets yield a lot of results. This simply proves my anxiety was not totally groundless after all. Admittedly, there are a number of benefits from going into a low carb diet, the most obvious of which is losing weight. Nevertheless, one may still have to question the merits of the low carb diet for nothing is flawless after all. </p>

<p>If you have heard about the Mediterranean diet but is not really familiar to how it works, here&#8217;s some helpful information from the American Heart.org, the official website of the American Heart Association.</p>
<p>To tell you, there is not one standard Mediterranean diet. &#8220;Mediterranean&#8221; diet, as the name suggests comes from at least 16 countries that border the Mediterranean Sea. The diets between these countries are many and various &#8211; their differences are characterized by each country&#8217;s own culture, ethnic background, religion, economy and agricultural production. </p>
<p><span id="more-1783"></span></p>
<p>However, the common Mediterranean dietary pattern possess five characteristics. First, it has high consumption of fruits, vegetables, bread and other cereals, potatoes, beans, nuts and seeds. These foods are flavorized with the delicious olive oil, a monounsaturated fat source. Other fat sources are taken in low to moderate amounts like dairy products, fish and poultry (eggs are consumed zero to four times a week) and little red meat. Some wine is consumed in low to moderate amounts.</p>
<p>Now that we know how the diet works, you may be wondering if a Mediterranean-style diet follow the American Heart Association dietary guidelines. <a target="_blank" target="_new" rel="nofollow" href="http://www.body4beach.com">Mediterranean-style diets</a> are often close to our dietary guidelines, but they don&#8217;t follow them exactly. In general, the diets of Mediterranean peoples contain a relatively high percentage of calories from fat. This is thought to contribute to the increasing obesity in these countries, which is becoming a concern.</p>
<p>People who follow the average Mediterranean diet eat less saturated fat than those who eat the average American diet. In fact, saturated fat consumption is well within our dietary guidelines.</p>
<p>More than half the fat calories in a Mediterranean diet come from monounsaturated fats (mainly from olive oil). Monounsaturated fat doesn&#8217;t raise blood cholesterol levels the way saturated fat does.</p>
<p>The incidence of heart disease in Mediterranean countries is lower than in the United States. Death rates are lower, too. But this may not be entirely due to the diet. Lifestyle factors (such as more physical activity and extended social support systems) may also play a part.</p>
<p>Before advising people to follow a Mediterranean diet, we need more studies to find out whether the diet itself or other lifestyle factors account for the lower deaths from heart disease.

<p>It&#8217;s very important to watch what you eat. You are eating for two&#8211;which doesn&#8217;t mean that you eat more (so say goodbye to that second slice of cake), but that you eat smart. You are your baby&#8217;s only source of nutrients, and you need the proper balance of proteins, vitamins, minerals, fiber and carbohydrates.</p>
<p>That being said, most prenatal dieticians strongly advise against adhering to a strict no-carb diet. Without sufficient carbs, your body will produce a by-product called ketones during your blood stream, which can put your baby at risk for brain damage. </p>
<p><span id="more-1777"></span></p>
<p>But what about low carb diets? Aside from the risk of mental retardation, there are some aspects of low carb diets that can worsen the discomforts of pregnancy. For example, low carb diets tend to have low levels of dietary fiber, which exacerbate the constipation that many pregnant moms suffer because of the required iron supplements. Also, most prenatal dieticians recommend taking a lot of fruit because of its rich vitamin content, but most of the items you&#8217;ll find in a typical shake are banned by Atkins and South Beach because of the sugars.</p>
<p>But some doctors may recommend taking modified low-carb diets, especially if you are obese, suffer from gestational diabetes or low blood sugar. All three conditions have been proven to have adverse affects on the baby (including prematurity, birth defects, and early rupture of the membranes) so losing weight or controlling intake may actually be the best thing for your baby. </p>
<p>If you are asked to go on a low-carb diet during pregnancy, you will probably be told to go on the maintenance phase of the Atkins Diet, or the second phase of the South Beach Diet. Here, you are allowed a controlled number of carbohydrates, usually from whole grains and fruits, while minimizing white bread, white rice, and pasta. That is fine, as you are still giving your baby the adequate nutrients, while removing processed foods. </p>
<p>If you are not allowed to go low-carb, but still need to control your weight, there are some options open to you. First of all, eat small but frequent meals. If you want a snack, instead of taking junk food or processed meats (which have a lot of calories, but significantly less nutrients), take salads, fruits, nuts and crackers. Choose lean cuts of meat, and minimize salt and rich sauces during cooking. And while you do need carbohydrates, take in moderation. One plate of pasta is good, three servings of it smothered in white sauce is not. </p>
<p>But the most important thing to remember is that before you go on any diet during pregnancy consult your obstetrician-gynaecologist. She or he can properly determine the best course of action given your particular medical history and the condition of your baby. Do not go on any weight management program without the advice and the approval of your doctor. Whether it&#8217;s low carb or Zone or the Mediterranean Diet, the point is that there is a proven link between prenatal nutrition and the baby&#8217;s health. Complications can include low birth weight, birth defects, and early delivery.</p>

Of all the many diets, two of them, South Beach and Atkins, tell you that losing weight and consuming carbohydrates do not go together. This is not entirely true. There are bad carbohydrates, and there are good carbohydrates, so you need the right ones. The way you need to do it, is to only eat small amounts of the good, while eliminating the bad. When you need help coming up with the right diet plan, seek out a good nutritionist to do it for you. You can get started with some of the following tips, while you are waiting.</p>
<p>Substitute cauliflower for rice. Not many people know this, but cauliflower is a great low carb vegetable that can take the place of rice. It also cooks much more quickly than regular rice. So grating some cauliflower and using it in dishes calling for rice will give you a faster, lower calorie meal. Almost one hundred percent of the recipes that tell you to use rice can be made using cauliflower instead. The only drawback is that cauliflower is typically more expensive than rice. For a low carb alternative, though, it&#8217;s worth using at least some of the time. </p>

<p>Rationale of South Beach DietThe South Beach Diet is based on the glycemic index of foods and uses the index to integrate specific foods back into the diet. In other words, this diet is consumed on the theory that eating the wrong carbohydrates leads to insulin resistance (major cause of diabetes) and weight gain. Hence, the rise in blood sugar after eating carbohydrate is not the main factor in weight gain. Instead, the amount of total calories eaten is the major factor affecting weight loss or gain. Glycemic index looks at the effect of specific foods on blood sugars and how much they are raised after eating each respective food. By including foods that do not increase blood sugar as much, such as those with a low glycemic index, the South Beach Diet claims that dieters will have less insulin response and ultimately lose weight. Overall the diet will be lower in total energy than previously being consumed and hence more weight loss will be seen.</p>

<p>The Mediterranean diet is a diet based on eating the foods people who live in the Mediterranean basin eat. This mild area around the Mediterranean sea includes areas of many countries including France, Italy, Spain, the Balkans and even parts of Africa.</p>
<p>The most known form of the Mediterranean diet was created in the mid-1990s by a Harvard health professor named Walter Willett. The diet calls for regular physical activity, along with abundant plant food, fresh fruit as a dessert, olive oil, dairy products, fish and poultry, up to four eggs each week, red meat in small amounts, and wine. The fat in this diet is controlled, only up to 35% of calories, saturated fat at less than 8% of total calories. It&#8217;s considered a low-fat high dietary fiber diet. The first version of the diet was published in 1945, but the Mediterranean diet didn&#8217;t become well known until the late 20th century.</p>

<p>Whereas American diets rely on animal fats, the Mediterranean diet utilizes olive oil. Olive oil is known to lower cholesterol levels in the blood, as well as blood sugar and blood pressure. Studies have shown that olive oil helps reduce the risk of many types of cancer as well as of ulcers. Red wine also adds to the mix in that it contains elements with antioxidant properties.</p>
<p>The American Heart Association recommends diets like the Mediterranean diet. However, the AHA frowns on the amount of fat allowed by the Mediterranean diet. The heart association points to the growing problem of obesity in countries around the Mediterranean basin, which is a serious health concern. However, the American Heart Association does like the fact that most of the fat in the Mediterranean diet comes from olive oil, mono saturated fat, that doesn&#8217;t raise cholesterol. Researchers aren&#8217;t sure whether better health in the Mediterranean basin is due to diet or the fact they get a lot of exercise, mostly from walking.</p>
